Trainspotting - "Choose Life"

With its hallucinatory visions of crawling dead babies and a grungy plunge into the filthiest toilet in Scotland, you might not think Trainspotting could have been one of the best movies of 1996, but Danny Boyle's film about unrepentant heroin addicts in Edinburgh is all that and more. Based on the acclaimed novel by Irving Welsh, the film was a huge hit in Europe and to a lesser extent the U.S.

In this scene, Renton is chased down an Edinburgh street by police. His monologue has since covered the walls of student flats around the world.

Trainspotting - Choose Life

STREET (DAY)
Legs run along the pavement. They are Mark Renton's.
Just ahead of him is Spud. They are both belting along.
As they travel, various objects (pens, tapes, CDs, toiletries, ties, sunglasses, etc.) either fall or are discarded from inside their jackets. They are pursued by two hard-looking Store Detectives in identical uniforms. The men are fast, but Spud and Renton maintain their lead.

RENTON (voice-over): Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players, and electrical tin openers.
Suddenly, as Renton crosses a road, a car skids to a halt, inches from him.
In a moment of detachment, he stops and looks at the shocked driver, then at Spud, who has continued running, then at the two men, who are closing in on him. He starts to laugh.

RENTON (voice-over): Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed-interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends.

RENTON (voice-over): Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose a three piece suit on hire purchase in a range of fucking fabrics. Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarassment to the selfish, fucked-up brats you have spawned to replace yourself. Choose your future. Choose life.
